Facebook just offered me this as an advertisement option. Usually, I get ads telling me that President Obama wants me to go back to school (nooooooo! I've been there already!), or ads insinuating that at my advanced age, I need to buy stuff to ward off aging. I just ignore these.
I clicked on this ad, curious because I saw the name of super-misogynist extraordinaire J.B. Handley on it. The blurb on the Amazon.com page reads as follows:
Matthew Faiella sat comfortably in the exam room of the small Costa Rican clinic. Although he couldn’t really comprehend the event about to unfold or the journey it took to get him to this moment. His parents reassured him everything would be fine. It was February of 2008. Matthew was about to become one of the first children in the world to receive cord blood/adult stem cell injections for autism.
Holy shit. Stem cell transplantation for autism. In Costa Rica. The mind boggles. Silver treatments. Gold treatments. The standard HBOT. The result? A book called Out of the Darkness. It likely will come as no surprise that this is an AoA fave. The mother, it seems, is a breast cancer survivor. The child, it seems, is a survivor of many many other things.
A quick review of the table of contents revealed a dire need for some professional copy editing. I'm wondering if the contents reveal a dire need for some scientific review. And no, I'm not going to read it. I've got retinas and synapses to preserve here. After all, as FB gently notes, I'm not getting any younger.

The AoA'ers and some of the other biomeddling discussion lists have been talking up stem cell transplants for years.
And according to Meyer Eisenstein, vaccines do do cause autism. Still.

I'm under the impression you can get stem cells for nearly anything in many parts of the world.
It is no different to importing cocaine is it, or replying to all those ads for viagra.
If it is illegal in the US or wherever you can be sure that the supply from elsewhere is well dodgy.
Does anyone remember all that HGH that was contaminated with BSE, some people are on a risky ride to a lifelong future of regret.
Had to keep a nice voice on when a mother told me she was doing something similar in China with her daughter. For Epilepsy and ASD.
Stopped answering my phone for the rest of that day. xx
Liz, I know. It's just so startling to me. I edit papers in stem cell research ALL the time. You want to talk about *not being safety tested in people*. Lord.
FW2...well, at least for many things.
Author...yes. True.
Lisadom...sometimes, I do feel that my hair must be standing straight up on my head when people tell me certain things.
I kid you not that 10 years ago when my oldest was born, parents were contemplating implanting stem cells in their children's brains to develop their absent corpus callosums. Back then, there were also parents doing HBOT for agenesis of the corpus callosum along with pretty much all the autism 'treatments' that are out and about today. Some days I want to go back to that listserve and see how the kids fared as many of them would be teenagers and adults...then I remember why I left that listserve in the first place.
